What happens to a tennis ball when you’re done with it?

Most of us have probably never thought much about it. We play with a can of balls until they’re worn out, open a new one, and eventually throw the old ones away.

We didn’t think much about it either—until we realized how much waste that creates.

Around 125 million tennis balls are thrown away each year in the U.S., and tennis balls can take hundreds of years to break down. For something we use all the time as tennis players, we felt like this was a problem worth doing something about.

So, we’re starting local.

Trophy Tennis is placing tennis ball recycling bins at courts around the Katy–Fulshear area so players have an easy alternative to throwing their old balls in the trash.

When the bins fill up, we collect the balls and send them to RecycleBalls, where the balls can be reused or recycled instead of ending up in a landfill.

It’s pretty simple.

01. Play. 🎾Use your tennis balls like you normally would.02. Recycle. ♻️When they’re worn out, drop them in one of our bins.03. Collect. 📦We pick up the used balls from participating courts.04. Repurpose. 🌎The balls are sent to RecycleBalls to be reused or recycled into new materials.

Why We’re Doing It

Small change. A lot of tennis balls.

We know recycling tennis balls isn’t going to solve every environmental problem.

But it’s something our tennis community can actually do something about.

If we can make recycling as easy as throwing a ball in the trash, we can keep thousands of tennis balls out of landfills and hopefully get more players thinking about sustainability in our sport.

And if it works here, we’d love to see the idea grow beyond our community.
